Education

JoyLand's work in English education began after my experience teaching in China. Families I knew there told me that private English tutoring was often expensive and difficult to access, so I began sharing lessons and resources that anyone could use for free.

English and American culture on WeChat

At first, I simply read English stories aloud and shared them online. As more students began following JoyLand, I created short videos that introduced everyday American life and vocabulary together.

During Halloween, for example, I showed my candy and costume while teaching related words and phrases.

I also created daily “Fun Fact” videos, giving students a simple way to practice English while learning something new.

A community, not just a channel

As the community grew, I created eight WeChat discussion groups, each with around 500 members. These groups allowed students and parents to ask questions, respond to lessons, and interact with one another rather than simply watching videos.

Live lessons and one-on-one tutoring

I hosted free group English lessons on Google Meet and Zoom, giving students a chance to practice together and receive direct instruction.

To give students more personal support, I recruited three friends as tutors and matched each student with a tutor for one-on-one sessions.

Cultural Exchange Summer Camp

I organized an in-person cultural exchange summer camp that hosted more than 12 families. I arranged host families and planned cultural experiences and activities, so students could practice English and experience American life firsthand.

2024 JoyLand Scholarship

In 2024, I organized a scholarship program funded by JoyLand supporters. I interviewed about 20 applicants and selected six students to receive ¥10,000 scholarships each. The other 14 applicants each received ¥1,000 in support.

I later visited the recipients in person to present their awards.
